Croatia is the Mediterranean's busiest bareboat coast, and for good reason: more than a thousand islands sit within a day's sail of the mainland, the water is deep right up to the shore, and a well-established network of marinas, buoy fields and harbour quays means there is somewhere to tie up almost every few miles. The charter fleet reflects that — sailing yachts lead, catamarans are strongly represented, and there is a large motorboat fleet for day trips and short hops between islands.

Most charters start in central Dalmatia. The Split region, with bases in Split, Trogir and Kaštela, opens onto Brač, Hvar and Vis. Further north, Sukošan and Biograd na Moru near Zadar and the marinas around Šibenik give access to the Kornati archipelago and the Krka river. Istria and the Kvarner islands around Krk suit shorter passages, and Dubrovnik is the base for the Elaphiti islands and Mljet.

The season runs from May to October. In summer the maestral, a steady north-westerly, fills in most afternoons; the bura (bora) can bring sudden, gusty north-easterlies, and the jugo brings south-easterly swell and cloud. Charter weeks run Saturday to Saturday, and in July and August the popular harbours fill early, so plan to arrive by mid-afternoon.

Questions about chartering here

Do I need a licence to charter a yacht in Croatia?

For a bareboat charter the skipper needs a recognised sailing licence, and someone on board needs a VHF/SRC radio certificate. If nobody in the crew holds them, most boats can be chartered with a skipper.

When is the best time to sail in Croatia?

June and September combine warm water, reliable afternoon breezes and quieter anchorages. July and August are the busiest and most expensive weeks; May and October are calmer and cheaper, but some island restaurants and buoy fields are not yet open or have closed.

Where should I start a Croatian charter?

For island-hopping to Hvar, Vis and Korčula start in the Split region. For national parks and quieter, more sheltered cruising — the Kornati and the Krka river — start near Zadar or Šibenik.

How many charter boats are available in Croatia?

6,038 boats are based in Croatia in our latest fleet snapshot, from operators including Master Yachting, Euronautic, Angelina Yacht Charter.

How much does a yacht charter in Croatia cost?

Nightly prices start at €97 for a boat with cabins; a typical boat here costs about €180 a night, roughly €1,260 for a Saturday-to-Saturday week. July and August cost more, and skipper, fuel and extras are usually on top.

Which boat types can I charter in Croatia?

The fleet here includes: Sailing yacht (2460), Motorboat (1755), Catamaran (946), Motor yacht (750), Gulet (81), Power catamaran (46).
