Spain's charter market is built around the Balearic Islands and the Mediterranean mainland coast. Mallorca and Ibiza hold the largest fleets, Menorca and Formentera round out the archipelago, and on the mainland Catalonia's Costa Brava, the Valencian Community around Denia and Torrevieja, and Andalusia's Costa del Sol around Marbella all have active bases. Tenerife adds an Atlantic option in the Canary Islands.
The fleet of around 2,450 boats leans heavily towards motorboats — the largest single group, used for day trips to beaches and coves — followed by motor yachts, sailing yachts and catamarans. For a week under sail, Palma, Port d'Andratx and the smaller Mallorcan harbours are the classic starting points; Ibiza's bases are the gateway to Formentera, and Mahón on Menorca suits a quieter week.
The Mediterranean season runs from May to October, with warm, reliable sea breezes in summer. The tramontana, a northerly, can blow hard off the north coasts of Mallorca and Menorca and around the Costa Brava. The Canaries are sailed year-round in the north-east trade winds. In July and August the Balearic anchorages are busy, and many sensitive bays have mooring buoys or anchoring restrictions to protect the seagrass.

Questions about chartering here
Where should I start a sailing charter in Spain?
For a week under sail, start in Mallorca: Palma and Port d'Andratx have large fleets and the island offers a varied coast within easy reach. Ibiza suits crews who want Formentera and a livelier scene; Menorca is quieter and more sheltered in its southern coves.
Do I need a licence to charter a boat in Spain?
For a bareboat charter the skipper needs a recognised sailing or motorboat licence, and a VHF radio certificate is usually expected. Skippered charters need no licence, and many day-trip motorboats are offered with a skipper.
When is the best time to charter in the Balearics?
June and September have warm water and fewer boats in the anchorages. July and August are the peak and the most crowded; May and October are quieter and cooler, with a greater chance of unsettled weather.
How many charter boats are available in Spain?
2,451 boats are based in Spain in our latest fleet snapshot, from operators including Cruesa Mallorca Yacht Charter, SailMe, My Yachtweek.
How much does a yacht charter in Spain cost?

Which boat types can I charter in Spain?
The fleet here includes: Motorboat (1122), Sailing yacht (512), Motor yacht (486), Catamaran (300), Power catamaran (22).
