Catalonia's charter coast runs from the French border to the Ebro delta, and it divides into two quite different areas. In the north, the Costa Brava is a rocky coast of pine-covered headlands and small coves, with bases at Roses, Empuriabrava, L'Estartit, Palamós, Platja d'Aro and Blanes. Further south, Barcelona, Sitges and Cambrils give access to a straighter coast of beaches and city harbours.
Motorboats make up the clear majority of the fleet, many of them small boats for half-day and day trips to the coves; sailing yachts, motor yachts and a small number of catamarans cover longer charters. That makes Catalonia a strong choice for a day on the water, and a good one for a relaxed week along the Costa Brava.
A sailing week from Palamós or Roses can explore the coves around Cadaqués and the Cap de Creus headland, the Medes islands marine reserve off L'Estartit and the coast down towards Tossa de Mar. The tramontana, a strong northerly, is the wind to respect around Cap de Creus and the Gulf of Roses; on most summer days the breeze is a moderate afternoon sea breeze. The season runs from May to October, and Mallorca is an overnight passage away for experienced crews.
