The Lefkada region is the heart of Ionian chartering and one of the gentlest cruising grounds in the Mediterranean. Bases are spread around the island and the mainland opposite: Lefkada town in the north, Nydri, Nikiana and Vliho on the sheltered east coast, Sivota in the south and Preveza across the channel on the mainland.
The water between Lefkada and the mainland is often called the Inland Sea — a group of islands including Meganisi, Kalamos and Kastos, sheltered from the open sea, with small harbours and wooded anchorages a few miles apart. Further south, Ithaca and the north of Kefalonia make a longer but still easy passage.
The fleet is sailing yachts and catamarans, with a small motorboat fleet for day trips. Winds are reliable rather than strong: mornings are often calm, and a north-westerly breeze fills in during the afternoon, which makes this a natural place for a first bareboat week or a flotilla. The season runs from May to October, and Preveza's airport is the closest to the bases.
