Lefkada town sits at the northern tip of the island, where a causeway and a canal separate Lefkada from the mainland. Almost the whole fleet is based at Lefkas Marina on the edge of town, with more boats on the town quay, and the old streets and waterfront cafés are a short walk from the pontoons.
The fleet here is entirely sailing yachts and catamarans. Lefkada town is the gateway to the Ionian from the north: every boat heading south to the Inland Sea passes through the Lefkada canal, and at the northern end a swing bridge on the causeway opens on a set schedule for boats heading out to the open sea or towards Preveza.
The first day usually runs south down the canal and along the east coast to Nydri or Vliho, a short and sheltered leg that suits the first afternoon on an unfamiliar boat. North, Preveza and the Ambracian Gulf offer a quieter alternative, and the open west coast of the island is best seen as a day sail in settled weather rather than as an overnight stop.
