Fleet snapshot of September 28, 2026. Prices and availability change daily — the live list below is current.
Italy has one of the longest coastlines in the Mediterranean, and its charter fleet is spread across several distinct cruising grounds rather than one hub. Sardinia, Campania and Sicily hold the largest share of boats, with smaller fleets in Tuscany, Liguria and Apulia. Sailing yachts lead a fleet of around 2,450 boats, followed by motorboats, catamarans and motor yachts, and there is even a small houseboat fleet inland.
Each region sails differently. North-east Sardinia, around Olbia, Portisco and Cannigione, opens onto the La Maddalena archipelago and the Strait of Bonifacio. Campania, from Salerno, Sorrento and Procida, is the Bay of Naples, Capri and the Amalfi Coast. In Sicily, Portorosa and Capo d'Orlando on the north coast are the jumping-off points for the Aeolian islands, while the west coast leads to the Egadi islands. Tuscany adds Elba and its archipelago.
The season runs from May to October. The maestrale, a north-westerly, is the dominant summer wind in the west and can blow hard through the Bonifacio strait; the scirocco brings hot, humid south-easterlies from Africa. July and August are the busiest weeks, when harbours on Capri, the Costa Smeralda and the Aeolians fill early.

Questions about chartering here
Where should I start a sailing charter in Italy?
For sheltered island hopping and clear water, start in north-east Sardinia. For towns, food and short hops between famous islands, start in Campania. For volcanic islands and longer passages, start on Sicily's north coast and head for the Aeolians.
Do I need a licence to charter a boat in Italy?
For a bareboat charter the skipper needs a recognised sailing licence, and a VHF radio certificate is usually expected. If nobody in the crew holds one, most yachts, and larger motor yachts in particular, can be chartered with a skipper.
When is the best time to sail in Italy?
June and September offer warm water, steady breezes and more space in harbours. July and August are the peak weeks and the most crowded; May and October are quieter, with cooler water and a greater chance of unsettled weather.
How many charter boats are available in Italy?
2,456 boats are based in Italy in our latest fleet snapshot, from operators including Marina Yacht Charter, Starsail Charter Italy, Yachting in Sardinia.
How much does a yacht charter in Italy cost?
