Cruising Swiss Lakes

Switzerland's lakes look sheltered, but they have a mountain temper: the bise and the joran can turn Lake Geneva or Lake Neuchâtel from glassy to white-capped in minutes, the föhn falls down the valleys of Lucerne and Walensee in violent gusts, and there is no tide to read — only the storm-warning lights around the shore. Depth comes from swisstopo's official swissBATHY3D multibeam survey at 1 m resolution, with harbours and anchorages from community mapping. This region covers twelve lakes: Geneva, Constance, Zurich, Lucerne, Neuchâtel, Biel, Murten, Zug, Thun, Brienz, Walensee and the Swiss basin of Lago Maggiore.

Questions

What do the flashing orange lights on shore mean?

They are storm-warning lights. About 40 flashes a minute is a precautionary warning; about 90 a minute is a storm warning — head for the nearest harbour, and let the chart's depths get you in.

Which lakes are included?

Twelve lakes with full 1 m swissBATHY3D depth: Geneva (Swiss and French shores), Constance, Zurich, Lucerne, Neuchâtel, Biel, Murten, Zug, Thun, Brienz, Walensee and the Swiss basin of Lago Maggiore. Lake Lugano is not included yet.

Does it work on the lake without mobile data?

Yes — fully offline once downloaded, so patchy coverage under the mountains and roaming near the borders don't matter.
