Switzerland is landlocked, and its charter offer is lake boating. The fleet is small and made up mostly of motorboats, with a few sailing boats and houseboats. Most rentals are for a few hours or a day rather than a week, which suits lakes where the scenery is the destination.

The fleet is spread across several lakes. Lake Zug in central Switzerland and Lake Thun in the Bernese Oberland, with the Alps rising straight from the shore, are both well suited to a day on the water, with swimming stops and lakeside villages. In Ticino, the Italian-speaking south, Lake Lugano and Lake Maggiore add a Mediterranean feel, with palm-lined promenades and mountain views.

The season runs from about May to September. Lakes are usually calm, but thermal winds build in the afternoon on many of them, and summer thunderstorms can bring sudden strong gusts. Swiss lakes use storm warning lights on the shore; watch them and head back to harbour when they flash.

When is the best time to go?

June to August for warm days and water warm enough for swimming. May and September are quieter but cooler.

Which lake should I choose?

Choose Lake Thun for the Alpine backdrop, Lake Zug for easy access from central Switzerland, and the Ticino lakes for a southern, Mediterranean atmosphere.

How many charter boats are available in Switzerland?

26 boats are based in Switzerland in our latest fleet snapshot, from operators including Segelschule Thunersee, Zugboatrental GmbH, SeaTime.

How much does a yacht charter in Switzerland cost?
