The Côte d'Azur is France's busiest charter coast, stretching from Marseille and its calanques to the Italian border. The fleet is spread along the whole coast rather than in one hub: Toulon, Saint-Mandrier and Six-Fours in the west, Hyères for the Golden Isles, Cogolin and Port Grimaud in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, Saint-Raphaël, Mandelieu-la-Napoule, Cannes, Golfe-Juan and Antibes in the centre, and Beaulieu-sur-Mer and Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat towards Monaco.

Motorboats, motor yachts, sailing yachts and catamarans are all well represented, and much of the fleet is only a few seasons old. A typical sailing week starts from Hyères or Toulon and visits Porquerolles, Port-Cros — a national park — and the Île du Levant, then runs east past Cap Lardier to Saint-Tropez; from Cannes or Antibes, the Lérins islands, Sainte-Marguerite and Saint-Honorat, are an easy first-night anchorage.

The season runs from May to October. The mistral, a strong north-westerly, blows hardest in the west around Marseille, Toulon and Hyères, while the coast east of Saint-Tropez is often more sheltered. In July and August harbours are full and expensive, and several popular bays limit anchoring to protect the seagrass.

Questions about chartering here

Which base should I choose on the Côte d'Azur?

For the Hyères islands, start from Hyères or Toulon. For Saint-Tropez, the marinas at Cogolin and Port Grimaud sit inside the gulf. For the Riviera, the Lérins islands and Monaco, choose Cannes, Antibes or Beaulieu-sur-Mer.

How do I get to a charter base on the Côte d'Azur?

Nice airport serves the Riviera bases from Cannes to Beaulieu-sur-Mer; Toulon-Hyères airport is closest to Hyères and Toulon, and Marseille airport serves the western end of the coast.

How does the mistral affect sailing on the Côte d'Azur?

The mistral can blow strongly for several days, mostly in the western part between Marseille and the Hyères islands. East of Saint-Tropez it is usually weaker, so crews often adjust their route to stay in the lee of the coast.

How many charter boats are available in Côte d'Azur?

710 boats are based in Côte d'Azur in our latest fleet snapshot, from operators including Philisa Apaca, Seaways Yachting, Y Knot Kiriacoulis Yachting.

How much does a yacht charter in Côte d'Azur cost?

Nightly prices start at €209 for a boat with cabins; a typical boat here costs about €373 a night, roughly €2,611 for a Saturday-to-Saturday week. July and August cost more, and skipper, fuel and extras are usually on top.

Which boat types can I charter in Côte d'Azur?
