Masuria, the Land of a Thousand Lakes, holds almost the whole of Poland's charter fleet. The Great Masurian Lakes run north to south from Węgorzewo on Lake Mamry to Ruciane-Nida in the south, linked by short canals and narrows, with Śniardwy, the largest lake in Poland, in the middle. It is fresh, sheltered water surrounded by forest, with small harbours and wild mooring spots along the shore.

Sailing yachts are the core of the fleet, with houseboats, motor yachts and motorboats alongside. Giżycko is the main hub, and Wilkasy, Bogaczewo and Piękna Góra sit right next to it; Węgorzewo covers the north, while Mikołajki, Stare Sady, Ruciane-Nida and Piaski serve the south. Most yachts are compact cabin sailboats with shallow draft and a lowering mast for the bridges.

The season runs from May to September. A typical week from Giżycko heads south through Niegocin and the canals to Mikołajki and a day on Śniardwy, or north to Mamry and Węgorzewo. Winds are usually moderate, but summer thunderstorms can arrive quickly; the large, open Śniardwy is the place to be most careful.

Questions about chartering here

Which base should I choose in Masuria?

Giżycko and its neighbours Wilkasy, Bogaczewo and Piękna Góra are central, so both ends of the lake system are within a few days' reach. Start in Węgorzewo for the northern lakes, or in Mikołajki or Ruciane-Nida for the southern lakes and Śniardwy.

Do I need a licence for a Masurian yacht?

For bareboat sailing the skipper should hold a recognised sailing licence; the operator will confirm what is accepted for the chosen boat. Skippered charter needs no licence on the part of the crew.

How do I handle summer storms on the lakes?

Check the forecast every morning, reef early when clouds build, and plan the day so that a sheltered bay or harbour is never far away. Crossing the big open lakes such as Śniardwy is best left for settled conditions.

How many charter boats are available in Masuria?
