Fleet snapshot of September 28, 2026. Prices and availability change daily — the live list below is current.
The British Virgin Islands are one of the easiest places in the world to start bareboat chartering. Some fifty islands and cays sit around the Sir Francis Drake Channel, which is sheltered from the Atlantic swell, and most hops between anchorages are only a few miles. Navigation is largely line-of-sight and mooring buoys are laid in many of the popular bays.
Almost every charter starts on Tortola: Road Town, including Wickhams Cay and Fort Burt, Nanny Cay, Soper's Hole on the west end and Hodge's Creek near Parham Town. The fleet is mostly catamarans, with a smaller choice of monohulls and power catamarans, and most boats are recent builds.
A typical week runs to Norman Island and the Caves, the Baths on Virgin Gorda, North Sound, Jost Van Dyke and Cane Garden Bay, with a longer reach out to low-lying Anegada for experienced crews. The trades blow from the east for most of the season, so plan the upwind legs early in the week. The main season is December to May; the hurricane season runs from June to November.

Is the British Virgin Islands a good place for a first bareboat charter?
Yes. Distances are short, the Sir Francis Drake Channel is sheltered, and many anchorages have mooring buoys. You still need a recognised sailing licence for bareboat; otherwise book with a skipper.
When is the best time to sail the BVI?
December to May, when the trade winds are steady and the weather is dry. June to November is the hurricane season; charters run, but itineraries should stay flexible.
What is a typical one-week BVI route?
From Tortola: Norman Island, Cooper or Peter Island, the Baths and North Sound on Virgin Gorda, then Jost Van Dyke and back. Sailing east first, while the crew is fresh, keeps the downwind legs for the end of the week.
How many charter boats are available in British Virgin Islands?
638 boats are based in British Virgin Islands in our latest fleet snapshot, from operators including Navigare Yachting, Dream Yacht Charter, The Moorings.
