Vietnam's charter fleet is small and still developing, with a handful of local operators offering sailing yachts and catamarans, mostly with a skipper. It is a destination for crews who want something off the usual charter map rather than a dense network of bases and marinas.

The long coastline offers very different cruising grounds: the limestone karst islands of Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay in the north, the bays and islands around Nha Trang on the south-central coast, and Phu Quoc and its neighbouring islands in the Gulf of Thailand. Check the listed base on each boat, as the fleet is spread thinly and trips are usually organised from one home port.

Weather varies a great deal by region. The south is driest from about December to April; the central coast gets most of its rain from about September to December; and the north has a cool, often misty winter and a hot, wet summer. Typhoons can affect the coast in the second half of the year, so plan with the local forecast and the operator's advice.
