Saint Lucia is a lush, mountainous island in the Windward Islands, best known for the twin volcanic peaks of the Pitons rising straight out of the sea on its south-west coast. Its small charter fleet is all catamarans, based at Rodney Bay Marina in the north of the island.
From Rodney Bay, a day's sail down the sheltered west coast leads to Marigot Bay and Soufrière, where you can moor below the Pitons. Many crews use Saint Lucia as the start of a longer passage: Martinique lies across the channel to the north, and St Vincent and the Grenadines to the south, for a week of island-hopping as far as Bequia and the Tobago Cays. Check the rules on clearing customs between countries before you plan such a route.
The season runs from about December to May, with steady easterly trade winds. The channels between the islands are open to the Atlantic and can bring a lively sea, while the west coasts in the lee of the islands are calmer. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November.
