Fleet snapshot of September 28, 2026. Prices and availability change daily — the live list below is current.
Portugal is an Atlantic charter destination with four distinct areas. The Algarve in the south, with bases at Lagos, Portimão, Vilamoura and Faro, has the largest fleet and the most sheltered summer sailing. Lisbon and the Tagus estuary, with Cascais, Setúbal and Sesimbra nearby, combine city sailing with the Arrábida coast. Porto is the base for trips on the Douro river, and Horta on Faial is the charter base in the Azores.
The fleet is small and varied: motorboats, sailing yachts and motor yachts in similar numbers, plus catamarans and power catamarans. Many boats are used for day trips — along the golden cliffs and grottoes of the western Algarve, on the Tagus beneath Lisbon's bridges, or up the Douro — while sailing yachts and catamarans suit longer charters along the coast.
The main season runs from May to October. The west coast is shaped by the nortada, a northerly that often blows fresh in summer afternoons, and by Atlantic swell; the south-facing Algarve is more sheltered, with lighter sea breezes. In the Azores, the Faial–Pico–São Jorge triangle offers mid-Atlantic island sailing, best from June to September.

Questions about chartering here
Where should I start a charter in Portugal?
The Algarve is the easiest start: the fleet is largest there, the coast faces south away from the prevailing northerly and harbours such as Lagos, Portimão and Vilamoura are close together. Lisbon suits city-based day sailing; the Azores suit experienced crews.
What is the nortada?
The nortada is the northerly wind that blows along Portugal's west coast in summer, often strengthening in the afternoon. It makes southbound passages pleasant and northbound ones hard work, so routes on the west coast are usually planned from north to south.
Do I need a licence to charter a boat in Portugal?
For a bareboat charter the skipper needs a recognised sailing or motorboat licence, and a VHF radio certificate is usually expected. Skippered charters and most day trips need no licence.
How many charter boats are available in Portugal?
272 boats are based in Portugal in our latest fleet snapshot, from operators including SailAzores, Palma Yachts, WTT Sailing.
How much does a yacht charter in Portugal cost?
Nightly prices start at €269 for a boat with cabins; a typical boat here costs about €466 a night, roughly €3,262 for a Saturday-to-Saturday week. July and August cost more, and skipper, fuel and extras are usually on top.
Which boat types can I charter in Portugal?
The fleet here includes: Motorboat (88), Sailing yacht (70), Motor yacht (68), Catamaran (33), Power catamaran (13).
