The Netherlands is built around water, and its charter fleet reflects that. Houseboats and motor cruisers make up most of it, cruising a dense network of lakes, rivers and canals where every town has a quay, while a solid fleet of sailing yachts uses the larger lakes and the IJsselmeer.
Friesland is the centre of chartering, with bases in Drachten, Woudsend, Jirnsum, Heerenveen, Sneek, Heeg, Koudum, Lemmer, Stavoren and Hindeloopen. The Frisian lakes suit relaxed motor cruising and small-boat sailing, and from Lemmer, Stavoren or Hindeloopen sailing yachts head out onto the IJsselmeer. Around Amsterdam and Utrecht, the Vinkeveen lakes and the waterways near Woubrugge offer quieter canal cruising, and in Zeeland, Yerseke and Wilhelminadorp give access to the Oosterschelde and the Veerse Meer.
The season runs from about April to October. Inland waters are flat and the main planning points are bridge and lock times. The IJsselmeer is shallow, so a fresh wind quickly builds a short, steep chop, and the open sea routes in Zeeland are tidal. A week in Friesland typically links a few lakes and historic towns without long days on the water.

Questions about chartering here
Do I need a licence to hire a boat in the Netherlands?
It depends on the size and speed of the boat. Many smaller, slower motor cruisers can be hired after a briefing, while larger or faster boats need a recognised licence, and a bareboat sailing yacht needs a recognised sailing licence. The operator confirms what applies to each boat.
Where should I start?
Friesland has the widest choice and suits both houseboats and sailing. Pick the Vinkeveen area for canal cruising close to Amsterdam and Utrecht, and Zeeland for tidal sailing on the Oosterschelde.
Is it suitable for first-timers?
Yes. Sheltered water, short distances and towns close together make inland cruising easy to learn. Allow time to practise at bridges and locks, and keep IJsselmeer crossings for days with moderate wind.
How many charter boats are available in Netherlands?
575 boats are based in Netherlands in our latest fleet snapshot, from operators including YachtCharter De Drait, Sail Charter Stavoren, Starsails Yacht Charter.
How much does a yacht charter in Netherlands cost?
Nightly prices start at €90 for a boat with cabins; a typical boat here costs about €161 a night, roughly €1,127 for a Saturday-to-Saturday week. July and August cost more, and skipper, fuel and extras are usually on top.
Which boat types can I charter in Netherlands?
The fleet here includes: Houseboat (386), Sailing yacht (158), Motorboat (28).
