Mauritius is a volcanic island in the Indian Ocean, almost entirely ringed by a coral reef that encloses calm, turquoise lagoons. Its charter fleet is small, made up mostly of catamarans with a few motor boats and motor yachts, and it is geared towards crewed day cruises and short trips rather than week-long bareboat sailing.

Typical outings are the east-coast lagoon trips to Île aux Cerfs, cruises from the north around Grand Baie to the offshore islands such as Coin de Mire, Flat Island and Gabriel Island, and dolphin-watching along the west coast. Snorkelling in the lagoon is part of almost every trip. With the reef close to shore and passes to navigate, boats are run by crews who know the local waters.

The south-east trade winds blow for much of the year and are strongest in the southern winter, from about May to October, when the east coast can be windy; the west and north coasts are more sheltered. The cyclone season runs from about November to April, with the highest risk in the middle of the summer.
