The Maldives are a chain of coral atolls in the Indian Ocean, and chartering here means a crewed yacht rather than a bareboat. The fleet is made up mainly of motor yachts, many of them traditional-style dhoni or purpose-built liveaboards, chartered with a captain, crew and usually a dive guide. Nightly prices are high because they cover the whole boat, the crew and generally full board.
Boats are based in the Hulhumalé lagoon, next to the international airport at Malé, so guests can step aboard soon after landing. Typical itineraries explore the North and South Malé atolls and Ari Atoll, combining snorkelling and diving on the reefs and channels with anchoring off uninhabited sandbanks and islands.
The dry season is the north-east monsoon, roughly December to April, with calm seas and clear water. The south-west monsoon, roughly May to November, brings more rain, wind and swell, though trips continue with routes adapted to the conditions. Navigation between atolls, through reef passes and strong tidal currents, is left to the crew.
