Madagascar's charter fleet is based at Nosy Be, the island off the north-west coast, and it is entirely catamarans. The cruising ground around it is one of the most unspoilt in the Indian Ocean: volcanic islands, mangroves, fishing villages and quiet anchorages, with whales, turtles and dolphins in season.

From Nosy Be, short hops lead to Nosy Komba and the marine reserve of Nosy Tanikely, while longer routes head north to the Mitsio islands or south to the Radama islands for a more remote week. Facilities along the way are limited, so boats are provisioned for self-sufficient cruising, and many are chartered with a skipper who knows the local waters.

The main season runs from about April to December, with the most settled weather in the southern-hemisphere winter. The cyclone season falls in the southern summer, peaking around January to March, when most charter activity stops.
