Ireland's charter fleet is entirely inland, made up of river cruisers on the River Shannon, the longest river in Ireland. The Shannon runs through a chain of large lakes, and, linked to the Shannon-Erne Waterway, it offers quiet villages, riverside pubs and wide lakes along the way.

There are two bases. Carrick-on-Shannon, in County Leitrim, holds most of the fleet and sits on the upper Shannon, within reach of Lough Key and the Shannon-Erne Waterway to the north. Portumna, at the northern end of Lough Derg, is the base for the lower Shannon and for the largest of its lakes.

The season runs from about March to October, with the long days of June and July the most popular. The river itself is slow and sheltered, but the big lakes, Lough Derg and Lough Ree, can build rough water in a fresh wind, so cross them in good conditions and follow the navigation markers carefully.

Questions about chartering here

Do I need a licence to hire a Shannon cruiser?

River cruisers on the Shannon are typically hired without a boating licence, after a handling and navigation briefing at the base. Confirm the requirements for your chosen boat with the operator.

Which base should I start from?

Carrick-on-Shannon suits a quieter week on the upper river and the lakes to the north. Portumna gives direct access to Lough Derg and the lower Shannon.

Is it suitable for beginners and families?

Yes. Cruisers are slow and easy to handle, the river is well marked, and there are plenty of public moorings. Take the large lakes in calm weather and stick to the marked channel.

How many charter boats are available in Ireland?

123 boats are based in Ireland in our latest fleet snapshot, from operators including Carrickcraft, Le Boat, Les Canalous.

How much does a yacht charter in Ireland cost?

Nightly prices start at €60 for a boat with cabins; a typical boat here costs about €111 a night, roughly €777 for a Saturday-to-Saturday week. July and August cost more, and skipper, fuel and extras are usually on top.
