Hungary is landlocked, and its charter fleet is on Lake Balaton, the largest lake in Central Europe. Almost every boat in the fleet is a sailing yacht, which fits the lake: Balaton is above all a sailing lake, some 80 kilometres long, with lakeside towns, vineyards on the northern hills and a long, sandy southern shore.
Bases include Alsóörs and Balatonfüred on the northern shore and Balatonfenyves on the southern shore. From the north shore, Tihany peninsula, where the lake narrows, is a short sail away, and a week usually combines a crossing to the south shore with day sails to towns and wine villages on both sides. Harbours are close together, so there is always an option to tie up for the night.
The season runs from May to September. The lake is shallow, so the wind quickly raises a short, steep chop, and summer storms can arrive fast. The lakeside storm warning lights are there for exactly this reason: watch them, reef early, and head for harbour when they start flashing.

June to early September brings warm water and settled days, with July and August the busiest. May and late September are quieter, with cooler weather and more variable winds.
Is Balaton suitable for beginners?
Yes, with care. There is no tide or ocean swell, and harbours are close together, but thunderstorms can bring sudden strong winds, so learn the storm warning signals and stay within reach of a harbour.
Do I need a licence to charter a yacht on Balaton?
For bareboat charter the skipper needs a sailing licence recognised for the lake; the operator will confirm what is accepted for a given boat. Without one, choose a skippered charter.
