Mecklenburg-Pomerania holds half of Germany's charter fleet, and almost all of it is houseboats. The Mecklenburg Lake District is a chain of lakes, rivers and short canals centred on the Müritz, the largest lake entirely within Germany, and joined by locks to the smaller lakes further south and to the Havel. It is sheltered water with a village, a mooring or a quiet anchoring spot every few kilometres.
The main bases are Wolfsbruch, Rechlin on the southern Müritz, Buchholz, Fürstenberg/Havel, Waren on the northern shore of the Müritz, Malchow, Röbel, Lübz, Priepert and Jabel. From any of them a week can take in open stretches of the Müritz, the narrow channels and forest lakes of the small-lakes area, and towns such as Waren and Malchow. Rostock is the exception: its sailing yachts head out onto the Baltic.
The season runs from about April to October. The lakes are flat and daily distances are short, so a week is about pace rather than weather, with lock opening times the main thing to plan around. On the Müritz itself a fresh wind can raise a short chop, so cross it in calm conditions.

Can I hire a houseboat here without a licence?
Some smaller houseboats in the lake district can be hired after a handling briefing at the base; larger boats and sailing yachts need a recognised licence. Check the requirement shown for each boat and confirm it with the base before booking.
What does a typical week look like?
A common plan starts at a base on or near the Müritz, crosses the lake to Waren or Röbel, then heads south through the locks into the small-lakes area around Mirow, Priepert and Fürstenberg/Havel before returning. Daily legs of a few hours leave plenty of time ashore.
When is the best time to go?
