Egypt's fleet covers two very different kinds of boat trip. On the Red Sea, Hurghada is the base for motor yachts chartered with a crew, for day trips to the Giftun islands and nearby reefs, and for multi-day dive liveaboards that visit the reefs and wrecks further offshore. The water is clear and the coral close to the surface, so snorkelling and diving are the main draw.
On the Nile, the fleet includes dahabiyas — traditional sailing houseboats with a handful of cabins — that cruise slowly between Luxor and Aswan, stopping at temples and riverside villages along the way. These are fully crewed, multi-night trips, which is why the largest boats in the fleet carry many cabins and the nightly prices are high.
The Red Sea is sailed year-round, with a prevailing northerly wind that often blows fresh in the afternoons; summer is very hot, and winter water is cooler. Nile cruises are most comfortable from about October to April, when the daytime heat in Upper Egypt is milder.
