Chile's charter fleet is small and specialised: a handful of sailing yachts, with the odd catamaran and motor boat, run by local operators, many of them focused on Patagonia. Many of the boats are older, expedition-style yachts, built for the conditions rather than for comfort, and most trips are run with a skipper.

The cruising grounds are unlike anywhere else. In the south, the channels and fjords of Chilean Patagonia wind past glaciers, forests and almost uninhabited islands, with very few facilities and long distances between settlements. Further north, the inland sea around Chiloé and the Gulf of Ancud offers more sheltered water, while the central coast offers day sailing. Check the listed base on each boat to see which area it serves.

The season follows the southern summer, from about December to March, with long daylight hours. Patagonian weather is changeable at any time of year, with strong westerly winds and sudden williwaw gusts coming off the mountains, so expedition trips are best left to an experienced skipper.

Questions about chartering here

When is the best time to sail in Chile?

The southern summer, from about December to March, with long days. Patagonian weather is changeable even then, with strong westerlies and sudden gusts.

Is Patagonia suitable for a bareboat charter?

Rarely. Distances are long, facilities are sparse and the weather is demanding, so most trips run with an experienced local skipper.

Do I need a licence to charter a boat in Chile?

Not for a skippered charter, which is the norm here. For a bareboat option the skipper needs a recognised sailing licence and solid experience.

How many charter boats are available in Chile?

10 boats are based in Chile in our latest fleet snapshot, from operators including Patagonia Sailing, SaltyBlood Turismo Náutico SPA, Veleros PlanV Chile SpA.

How much does a yacht charter in Chile cost?

Nightly prices start at €385 for a boat with cabins; a typical boat here costs about €1,081 a night, roughly €7,567 for a Saturday-to-Saturday week. July and August cost more, and skipper, fuel and extras are usually on top.
