Canada's charter fleet sits at opposite ends of the country and offers two very different trips: houseboat cruising on a historic canal in Ontario, and sailing and motor yachting among the islands of British Columbia.

In Ontario, Smiths Falls is the base for houseboats on the Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage waterway linking Ottawa and Kingston through lakes, rivers and hand-operated locks. A week here moves slowly through small towns, lock stations and quiet lakes. On the west coast, Nanaimo on Vancouver Island is the base for sailing yachts and motor yachts heading into the Gulf Islands, a sheltered archipelago in the Salish Sea with coves, small harbours and marine parks, and, for longer trips, further north towards Desolation Sound.

The season runs from about May to October, with July and August the warmest and busiest. On the Rideau, the pace is set by lock opening times. In British Columbia, summer winds are usually moderate, but tidal currents in the passes between the islands can be strong, so transits need to be timed to slack water.

Questions about chartering here

When is the best time to charter in Canada?

July and August for the warmest weather on both coasts. June and September are quieter, with cooler days and fewer boats at the locks and anchorages.

Do I need a licence?

Houseboats on the Rideau are typically hired after a handling briefing from the base. For a bareboat sailing or motor yacht in British Columbia, the operator will ask for proof of competence and experience. Confirm the requirements for your boat before booking.

Is the British Columbia coast suitable for a first bareboat charter?

It suits crews with some experience of tides and currents. The Gulf Islands are sheltered, but strong tidal currents in narrow passes need careful planning, and less experienced crews may prefer a skipper.

How many charter boats are available in Canada?

60 boats are based in Canada in our latest fleet snapshot, from operators including Le Boat, Rui charter, Nanaimo Yacht Charter.

How much does a yacht charter in Canada cost?

Nightly prices start at €198 for a boat with cabins; a typical boat here costs about €283 a night, roughly €1,981 for a Saturday-to-Saturday week. July and August cost more, and skipper, fuel and extras are usually on top.

Which boat types can I charter in Canada?

The fleet here includes: Houseboat (32), Sailing yacht (17), Motor yacht (10).
