Belgium's charter fleet splits between two very different waters. Most boats are houseboats and cruisers for the inland waterways, and a smaller group of sailing yachts is based on the short North Sea coast.
Nieuwpoort in West Flanders is the main base. Its marina, at the mouth of the IJzer, serves both sailing yachts heading out into the North Sea along the Belgian coast, towards Dunkirk or the Dutch estuaries, and houseboats that head inland along the Flemish canals and rivers. In the east, Kinrooi on the Maasplassen, a group of lakes along the Meuse on the Dutch border, is the base for houseboat cruising on sheltered lakes and the river.
The inland season runs from about April to October, and North Sea sailing is best from May to September. The North Sea coast is tidal, with strong streams and shifting sandbanks off the coast, so passages need to be planned around the tide, and the wind can build a short, steep sea. Inland, the water is flat and the main planning points are locks and bridge times.
