Australia's charter fleet here is based in the Whitsundays, a group of forested continental islands off the Queensland coast, inside the shelter of the Great Barrier Reef. The islands sit close together, most anchorages are a few hours apart, and the protected water makes it one of the more approachable tropical cruising grounds.

Boats start from Coral Sea Marina at Airlie Beach. A week usually takes in Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet on Whitsunday Island, the bays of Hook Island for snorkelling, and quieter anchorages around the smaller islands. Catamarans make up most of the fleet, which suits the beach anchorages and gives space for a group or family.

The south-east trade winds dominate from about April to September and can blow fresh for days; August to October brings lighter winds and dry, settled weather, often the most pleasant time to sail. The summer months are hot and humid, with the cyclone season running from about November to April and marine stingers present in the water, when a stinger suit is advisable for swimming. Tidal currents between the islands are strong, so plan passages with the tide.
